John Temple on the Future of Newspapers - Mar 13, 2009
by The Center for the Future of Museums News Department
In this BigThink video, John Temple, former editor of the Rocky Mountain News, talks about the future of newspapers. Museums share many of the same challenges—in fact, you could substitute “museum” for “newspaper,” and “curator” for “journalist” in much of this talk. Among other things, he discusses the growing expectation of users that they be involved in content development. This point has been explored both in Dr. McGonigal’s CFM talk “Gaming the Future of Museums” and the CFM report “Museums & Society 2034” by Reach Advisors. Mr. Temple foresees a more participatory world where newspapers become “more of a conversation along the lines of a blog, where the reader participates and expertise from the outside begins to moderate what we publish.”
