Future of Collections Storage - Mar 13, 2009

In his blog Prerogative of Harlots, Chris Norris, senior collections manager in the division of vertebrate paleontology at the Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale, gives a fascinating update on the university’s plans for museums, collections and research facilities at its new West Campus site, which is just beginning to be developed.

Norris muses on the possibilities for providing a new kind of open access to collections storage. “Whereas conventional galleries seek to impart the curator’s vision, browsable storage of this would have no preconceived message – it could act as a blank canvas on which the visitor could develop their own ideas. The challenge for us then would be to develop mechanisms for recording and sharing these ideas with other visitors.” This vision is apropos of the discussion in the CFM report Museums & Society 2034 of the growing expectation on the part of audiences that they play a role in developing content and shaping their own museum experience.
